Bafang Mid Motor

The best Bafang mid-drive motor in 2026

There is no "best Bafang motor" in the absolute, but there is a best motor for every way of riding. This ranking applies the same grid to the three kits in the catalog, then explains which criterion tips the choice in each case. It starts with the model that suits the largest number of riders, not the most powerful one: on a conversion kit, capacity that never gets used is paid for twice — once at purchase, once at install.

Our top pick: the BBS02B

The BBS02B takes the most useful spot in the ranking, the one for the motor that suits the largest number of riders. Its 120 Nm and 25 A controller cover city riding, loaded touring and moderate terrain without requiring a rethink of the whole bike. Above all, it shares the entry-level model's bottom bracket range — 68 to 73 mm — so it fits where a BBSHD wouldn't.

It is also the model best served by the ecosystem: displays, chainrings, gear-shift sensors and spare parts are found everywhere, and community documentation is abundant. For a first install, that availability matters as much as any spec: it decides how long a repair will take, not just an installation.

The kit that asks for the fewest compromises: simple install, torque that's enough everywhere, and the widest parts ecosystem in the range.

The most capable: the BBSHD

With 160 Nm and 30 A, the BBSHD doesn't know a grade that stops it. It takes the lead in three specific situations — cargo bike, sustained daily terrain, fat bike — and in exchange it demands a frame with enough clearance, a reinforced drivetrain and brakes up to the task. This isn't a gratuitous upgrade: it's a different build, with a different budget.

Its mass, 5.4 kg against 4.0 kg for the BBS02B, isn't the real issue. The real issue is what 160 Nm does to a chain and cassette sized for human legs. A gear-shift sensor and a reinforced chain are part of the build, not options on a list — they're the condition for the drivetrain to survive more than one season.

The only one that keeps the bike's status: the BBS01B

The BBS01B closes the ranking on the mechanical grid, and wins outright on a criterion the grid doesn't measure. In its 250 W version, with assistance that cuts off at 25 km/h, it is the only motor in the catalog that doesn't force the bike into a new category. For a daily commute on open roads and bike paths, that point outweighs every newton-metre in the world.

Its 80 Nm and 15 A controller are enough on flat to moderately hilly terrain, panniers included. It also accepts both 36 V and 48 V, which sometimes allows reusing an existing battery and seriously changes the total budget calculation.

The 250 W version capped at 25 km/h is the only Bafang kit that keeps the bike's original status, with the lightest and most compact kit in the range.

Three situations that flip the ranking

An overall rating describes a motor; it doesn't describe your bike. Three cases overturn the order above:

  • Your frame is tight around the bottom bracket. The clearance available comes before torque. A BBS02B that's actually installed beats a BBSHD that stays in its box.
  • You ride on a bike path every day. The question stops being about performance and becomes one of vehicle category, and only one version of one model answers it.
  • You already own a healthy 36 V battery. It will only work with the BBS01B, and the real budget gap between models widens accordingly.

How this ranking is built

Five criteria, the same grid for all three motors, an overall rating that's simply the average of the five: torque and pull, mechanical fit, pedaling feel, ecosystem and parts, and value for money. The detail of what each one rewards is published in our rating system, and the data-collection method in how we evaluate these motors.

The "pedaling feel" criterion deserves a note: all three kits run on a cadence sensor, so none can stand out on this point. It still counts toward the overall rating, because it flags a limit shared by the whole range, explained in cadence sensor or torque sensor.

What this ranking is not

A road test. We have not assembled any of these motors: our ratings rest on published manufacturer data and on how well each model fits the uses it targets. It is a documentary comparison, and it presents itself as one.

FAQ

Is the top-rated motor necessarily the one I need?

Not necessarily. Our rating rewards the motor’s intrinsic qualities, not how well it suits your bike. A highly rated BBSHD is useless if the housing doesn’t clear your chainstays, and no rating fixes that.

Why does the BBS01B rank last despite its appeal?

Because the ranking is based on mechanical qualities, not legal status. The BBS01B remains the only coherent choice for anyone who wants to keep a compliant pedelec: on that criterion, it has no rival in the range.

Do these ratings change over time?

They are recalculated whenever a manufacturer data point changes or a model joins the catalog. The grid itself stays identical for all three motors — that is what keeps the ratings comparable.
